Awe is a profound emotional response that can significantly impact our wellbeing and perception of the world. Awe often arises from experiences that transcend our usual understanding, such as viewing vast landscapes, listening to powerful music, encountering extraordinary acts of kindness, or feeling heightened devotion and a divine presence connecting us all.
To be a “Purveyor of Awe” is to be intentional about curating a life of spiritual depth. This has implications not only for one’s own life, but also as motivation to tend to the wellbeing of others – indeed for the world and our planet.
The science of awe investigates the psychological and physiological effects this emotion has on individuals. Research has shown that experiencing awe can lead to a range of positive outcomes. Psychologically, it can enhance feelings of connectedness to others and the universe, promoting a sense of belonging. Studies indicate that individuals who frequently experience awe are more likely to report higher levels of life satisfaction.
Physiologically, awe has been linked to positive bodily reactions. When we experience awe, our bodies release hormones like oxytocin which can foster social bonds. This connection reveals how awe can serve as a natural antidote to the stresses of daily life, offering a momentary escape that encourages mindfulness and presence.
Sociologically and ethically, awe broadens our perspective, allowing us to see beyond our individual concerns. This expansive view can stimulate creativity and increase open-mindedness, encouraging individuals to approach challenges with greater resilience. In a world increasingly characterized by division and isolation, cultivating awe in our lives can be a powerful tool for fostering connection and empathy.
“Purveyors of Awe” plays a vital role in enhancing spiritual, mental, and physical well-being, emphasizing the need for individuals and communities to seek out awe-inspiring experiences in their daily lives. Whether through nature, art, ritual, or human interaction, embracing awe can enrich our journey through life.

“As I write this we are moving through a time of disturbing foundation shaking in which structures that uplift the most vulnerable are being broken down. Each time I return to my writing I ask myself, ‘does focusing on awe really matter?’ And then I begin to review the research and I am reminded that these attributes of beauty, wonder, meaning, curiosity, delight, connection, and self-giving are not ‘fluff.’ They are about our very ability to exist and thrive, to be in touch with what we value in order to discern next steps, to be equipped for the healing that must happen in order to answer the challenges we are facing.” — from Purveyors of Awe
